Is Shillong becoming unsafe? The questions nobody is answering

Shillong has always been known as one of India’s most welcoming hill stations. The city earned its reputation not only because of its natural beauty but also because of the sense of security that residents and visitors felt here. Today, however, many citizens are beginning to ask a troubling question: Is Shillong becoming unsafe?
In recent months, a series of disturbing incidents has shaken public confidence and sparked intense discussions across social media platforms, local communities and public spaces. The disturbing part is that several cases remain unresolved, unanswered, or inadequately investigated.
The most recent case that captured public attention involved a young couple who were found hanging in a roadside shed in Nongthymmai. Almost immediately, questions began to emerge regarding the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Authorities reportedly indicated that the case appeared to be a suicide. But several questions remained unanswered. Did the police investigate every possible angle thoroughly? Had all evidence been examined?
This incident came on the heels of another suspicious death involving a man found hanging under circumstances that also raised concerns. Once again, discussions quickly turned to the manner in which such cases are investigated and classified.
The issue here is not whether police conclusions are correct or incorrect. The issue is public confidence. Whenever a suspicious death occurs, especially under unusual circumstances, citizens naturally expect a detailed and transparent investigation. If questions remain unanswered, speculation fills the vacuum.
Many residents have expressed concern that incidents involving hanging deaths are often perceived as being quickly labelled as suicides before the public is fully convinced that all possibilities have been explored. Whether this perception is fair or unfair, it reflects a growing trust deficit that authorities must address through openness, communication, and thorough investigative work.
Another recurring concern that has frustrated citizens is the issue of CCTV surveillance. Time and again, whenever major incidents occur, reports emerge that cameras in the area were either not functioning, unavailable, damaged, or failed to capture useful footage.
This raises serious questions about Shillong’s security infrastructure.
In an era where cities across the world increasingly rely on surveillance technology to deter crime and assist investigations, functioning CCTV systems are no longer a luxury—they are a necessity. Every time a major crime occurs and investigators discover that cameras were not operational, public confidence takes another hit.
Citizens have every right to ask: Why are cameras not working? Who is responsible for maintaining them? How often are they inspected? Are there adequate systems in place to ensure that surveillance equipment remains operational?
Beyond suspicious deaths, Shillong has also witnessed incidents of vandalism, theft and the torching of vehicles. These incidents may appear unrelated on the surface, but together they contribute to a growing perception that criminal elements are becoming bolder.
Vehicle torching is particularly alarming because such acts are not spontaneous accidents. They involve deliberate destruction of property and create fear among the public. When vehicles are set ablaze and perpetrators remain unidentified for extended periods, residents naturally begin to question whether enough is being done to bring those responsible to justice.
The larger issue is the message such incidents send. Every unresolved crime weakens public confidence and strengthens the perception that offenders can act without consequences.
Shillong has also seen incidents involving vandalism of public and religious property, which have further heightened concerns among citizens. Such acts not only damage physical structures but also affect communal harmony and public trust.
For many residents, the concern is not that crime exists. No city in the world is entirely free from crime. The concern is whether the response to crime is strong, effective, and capable of reassuring the public.
Public trust is built through transparency. Whenever major incidents occur, authorities should communicate clearly with citizens, provide regular updates, and explain investigative findings in a manner that addresses public concerns. Silence or limited information often fuels rumours and misinformation, especially in the age of social media.
At the same time, it is important to acknowledge that policing is a difficult task. Investigations require evidence, forensic analysis, witness statements, and legal procedures. Not every case can be solved immediately. However, the public also expects visible efforts and accountability.
The growing concerns surrounding safety in Shillong should serve as a wake-up call—not only for law enforcement agencies but also for policymakers, local authorities and community leaders.
Improving public safety requires investment in modern surveillance systems, better maintenance of existing infrastructure, increased police visibility in sensitive areas, stronger community policing initiatives, and faster communication during major investigations.
Shillong’s identity has always been built upon peace, hospitality, and community spirit. These qualities must be protected. Residents should not have to wonder whether suspicious deaths will receive thorough investigations. They should not have to hear repeatedly that crucial CCTV cameras were not functioning. They should not have to watch incidents of vandalism and vehicle torching without seeing those responsible brought to justice.
Shillong remains one of the most beautiful cities in India, and preserving the city’s beauty and reputation requires action, vigilance and a renewed commitment to law and order.
The question is no longer whether citizens are concerned. They clearly are. The real question is whether those responsible for ensuring public safety are listening—and whether meaningful steps will be taken before public confidence erodes further.
