Save your favourite makeup collection from humidity

Worried about makeup getting ruined during monsoon? You are not alone. When the monsoon hits, the amount of moisture in the air skyrockets. This constant dampness disrupts cosmetic formulas, especially those you frequently open and use.

Makeup and skincare, when stacked in your bathroom or on shelves exposed to high humidity, can easily develop mould and bacterial growth, rendering your favourite creams, serums and lipsticks less effective, or worse, unsafe to use.

Bathroom storage for makeup is the most common choice, but it’s rarely the best one. The steam from your showers can shorten your products’ lifespan, even if it’s convenient to prepare in front of the bathroom mirror.

Storing powder makeup in high humidity causes caking and hardening. Storing liquid makeup in a steamy bathroom leads to separation and bacterial growth.

Cosmetics contain ingredients that break down when exposed to heat, light, humidity and temperature changes. A foundation that’s been sitting in a hot, steamy bathroom will separate and oxidise faster than one stored in a cool, dry place. A cool, dry place helps preserve both the texture and the performance of your products.

Place all your powder-based products like compact face powder, eye shadows and other items in an airy and dry cabinet to keep dampness away from them.

Your bathroom is essentially a humidity chamber; every hot shower fills it with steam, and that moisture finds its way into your cosmetics.

That “tropical rainforest” vibe ruins formulas fast. Move your kit to a bedroom drawer or a vanity where the air is way more stable and dry.

Your bedroom drawer offers darkness, stability, and lower humidity. It’s cool, dry, and away from temperature fluctuations. A cool closet works well too, as long as it’s not near heating vents.

To keep your monsoon makeup essentials safe from the havoc of a downpour, store them in a waterproof makeup kit when travelling to block humid air from entering.

This will help keep your makeup products from getting soggy or sticky by keeping them away from rain water and moisture-laden air.

To protect moisture-prone makeup from humidity or dampness during wet weather, use a cool-setting hair dryer from a safe distance to gently evaporate excess surface moisture without melting cream or powder formulas.

Always tighten jars or pumps immediately after use. Every extra moment exposed to air increases the risk of oxidation.

This is especially important for water-based products like cleansers and toners, which can be more prone to bacterial growth if left open.

Get a special makeup bag for your favourite items. This is where you keep your best makeup and any other essentials that you always need to have on hand and use for your daily beauty regimen.

It’s easy to leave everything uncapped while you’re rushing through your routine, but during the monsoon, every second counts. High humidity and damp air rush into open containers, causing powders to clump, creams to grow mould and liquid formulas to separate or spoil.

Wet air helps germs and fungus grow inside open makeup pots, which might further affect their quality and results. Seal your liners, creams and powders the moment you’re done with them. It prevents damp air from settling in the product and prevents bacteria from entering.

A lid alone does not make a jar airtight. The quality of the seal is what counts. A loose press-fit lid or a worn-out gasket will let air and moisture pass through even when the jar looks properly closed. That gap is exactly where monsoon dampness gets in.

Jars with a multi-point locking lid are generally a dependable choice for dry storage during monsoon months, since they combine a tight seal with everyday practicality.

Monsoon calls for a completely different makeup bag. As we never know when a sudden shower will surprise us during the rains, use a waterproof bag or slip pouch to store makeup while travelling in the rainy season.

Besides products, make-up brushes can also lose their shape and working ability if not kept dry and safe during the monsoon. Make sure to seal the bristles in separate zip pouches and then place them in the drawers to keep humidity and fungus at a distance.

However, if you end up wetting the products accidentally, dry them using a blow dryer to get them back in their original form. However, overdoing it or doing it too frequently may result in degrading the colour and quality of the item.
