Dima Hasao mine accident: FIR filed, one held
Shillong, Jan 7: The police have registered an FIR under Umrangso PS citing Sections 3(5)/105 BNS, r/w Section 21(1) of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on social media.
At least 15 miners were trapped on Monday after water flooded a rat-hole mine in a remote area in Dima Hasao. “Prima facie, it appears to be an illegal mine. One Punish Nunisa has been arrested in connection with the case,” Sarma wrote on X.
Later, Sarma said, “I also spoke to Hon’ble Union Coal Minister, Shri @kishanreddybjp seeking assistance for our rescue operation in Umrangsu. He has promptly issued directions to @CoalIndiaHQ to extend full support to the Assam government in this mission. My sincere gratitude to him for his swift response and support.”
In another post on X, the Eastern Command said, “Troops from #SpearCorps and #AssamRifles under the aegis of #EasternCommand including Divers, Sappers, Medical Teams and support staff swiftly responded to an emergency requisition for the rescue of trapped miners in #Umrangso, Dima Hasao District of #Assam. The teams have reached the site early today morning and are working closely with civil authorities. Rescue operation is under progress.”
Six mine workers have survived the mine accident at Umrangso in Assam’s Dima Hasao, a source told Meghalaya Monitor. However, this could not be officially verified. The source also said the water level “may have reached 100 ft”.
