Headmen’s body welcomes KHADC election notification

Shillong, April 12: The umbrella body of headmen, Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong (SRS)  welcomed the recent notification of KHADC prohibiting the traditional heads to be associated with political parties.

RL Blah, the general secretary of SRS said on Wednesday that the Synjuk welcomes the notification of the council.

He pointed out that the Mylliem Syiemship Act 2007 clearly states regarding the need on the part of traditional heads to keep away from politics but this was very often violated.

Later, rules were also framed as per the Act .

On April 4, the KHADC executive committee issued a notification stating among others that a ‘Rangbah Shnong, Myntri Shnong, Sordar Shnong, Headman, Matabor shall not be a member of or be associated with any political party or any organisation which takes part in politics or assist in any manner any political movement or activity”.

Residential certificates 

The notification also mentions that the Rangbah Shnong, Myntri Shnong, Sordar Shnong, headman, Matabor must issue residential certificates to Khasi indegenous tribe strictly as provided under Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi lineage Act, 1997) and rules made there under. Moreover,  no certificate shall be granted to any resident for change of Khasi Kur/Jait /clan without following the provisions of the Act .The traditional heads on behalf of a Dorbar Shnong can issue residential certificates to local residents after proper verification of the antecedents and genuineness of such residents under the relevant Acts of the Hima/Elaka.

Sanad 

The notification further said that all duly elected traditional heads should get sanad ( appointment order) as per the rules of the Hima/Elaka. Anything contrary is illegal.
