Book Review

Mythology as a method to teach your kids numbers

Learning is always exciting when it is done through storytelling. And when you are a parent of a toddler or a child just exploring number books, then the new launch, Numbers with Krishna, can be helpful.

The book, written by Sarita Saraf and Priyanka Pachpande, teaches children to count from 1-10 through stories of Lord Krishna in two verses. There are stories of little Krishna being protected by Sheshnaag, Krishna frolicking with friends, holding the Govardhan mountain and being pampered by his foster parents, Yashoda and Nand.

In those two verses, an entire story is told. This way, it will pique the interest of children about the Indian mythology. In fact, the book is a great example of how to use mythology in a child’s daily learning process.

The illustrations are colourful, another way of hooking the interest of children.  Published by AdiDev, the book is a helpful addition to the collection of your child’s learning materials.

Having said that, the book, being focused on only Hindu mythology, makes it restrictive and may not be explored by those who do not follow the religion. In designing such books, one has to keep in mind that we are teaching our children secularism and not the dominance of one religion. So, such books should have reflections from various cultures, religions and mythologies. Education should be inclusive and that is what we must teach our children.
