One killed; Naga bodies blame Kuki militants
Imphal, June 8: A man was killed by armed persons at Charoi Pandongba village under New Keithelmanbi police station in Kangpokpi district of Manipur on Monday.
Various Naga organisations have accused Kuki militants of killing the man who has been identified as Chunjanglung Panmei (57), a resident of Charoi Pandongba village, a Rongmei Naga village.
Reports said Chunjanglung Panmei and two other villagers had gone to repair the village water pipe line when the incident happened. Panmei’s two colleagues escaped with injuries, the reports added.
Meanwhile, a candlelight vigil was held this evening in Tamenglong headquarters to mourn the death of Chunjanlung Panmei.
In a statement, the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) strongly condemned the “escalating pattern of violence, intimidation, abduction and assaults perpetrated against innocent civilians across Naga territory”.
The Naga student body said, “Yet again, Nagas are outraged by the reported unprovoked brutal attack and cowardly ambush upon Rongmei Naga Village Guards by Kuki armed militants at Charoi Pandongba-l, which has tragically culminated in the death of (Late) Chunjanglung Panmei, 57years, on June 8, 2026 after he was initially reported missing”, said the ANSAM, adding, “Reports indicate that the victims were engaged in the ordinary task of carrying out some village job when they were allegedly subjected to a calculated and unprovoked attack”.
UNC condemnation
The United Naga Council (UNC) has strongly condemned the “unprovoked attack by Kuki militants”, which led to the killing of Panmei.
UNC said “this cold-blooded murder of an innocent civilian is a grave violation of human rights and an attack on the Naga people as a whole”. The Council demanded the arrest of the perpetrators.
TheĀ UNC then said it will not remain a mute spectator to continued atrocities against the Naga people. “We call upon the Government of Manipur and the Government of India to act swiftly to deliver justice and prevent further escalation”, it further demanded.
