Shillong, June 1: The allegation of rape against NPP legislator Thomas Sangma by a woman has landed the ruling NPP in fresh trouble after poor handling of Covid and coal mining issue.
The woman, currently residing in a city locality, filed an FIR against the North Tura legislator and chief adviser to the chief minister, for allegedly raping her multiple times.
In the complaint, the woman alleged that though she wanted to lodge an FIR earlier, she changed the decision due to pressure from Thomas.
Though this reporter called up many a time to get his response, Thomas did not return the calls. A query was also sent to him via whatsapp but he did not respond.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger said, “A complaint was received from the woman against the legislator. Investigation into the matter is on”.
The SP did not divulge further details.
According to the FIR, the legislator allegedly raped her at her rented residence in the city and also in a city hotel with an assurance of marrying her after divorcing his wife.
The woman said she faced the abuse from January last year till April 17 this year and became pregnant.
The FIR also stated that the woman informed the legislator about the pregnancy and wanted him to stay with her. Instead, the legislator suggested abortion, the woman alleged.
She also assured to provide evidence to prove her statement.
The woman said though she had lodged an FIR in the past regarding the matter, she withdrew it due to ill health and she did not have the courage then to face the consequences as the legislator had allegedly threatened her to withdraw it .
The woman said she is currently mentally strong and pointed out that the reason for the delay in filing the FIR is that the legislator had sought sometime to sort out things but it did not happen.
The woman asked the police to arrest the legislator immediately to avoid tampering with the evidence.
She also cited threat to her life as the legislator may use his supporters to threaten her since he is a politician and an influential person.
