Sensex slips 338 points; rupee gains 7p

Mumbai, May 20 (UNI): The BSE Sensex on Thursday lost another 337.78 points to settle at 49,564.86 in volatile trade as selling pressure was seen in metal, materials, bankex and energy stocks.

Nifty fell by 124.10 points to 14,906.05. In the opening trade, Sensex rose by 69 points to 49,971.52. It surged by 197 points to 50,099.17 days high.

Later, it tumbled down 506 points to 49,496.78, day’s low before closing at 49,564.86, sliding by 337.78 points from its previous close.

Sensex registered days high and low at 50,099.17 and 49,496.78 points, respectively. Nifty recorded days high and low at 15,069.80 and 14,884.90 points, respectively.

The rupee on Thursday recovered by 7 paise to close at 73.10 against the USD on fresh selling of US Dollar by bankers and importers, dealers at the Forex Market said.

The domestic unit that rose marginally by two paise to 73.15 in opening trade, and finished at 73.10, gaining by 7 paise as compared to its previous close.

The local unit registered days high and low at 73.17 and 73.07, respectively. The rupee improved today owing to weak dollar against other world currencies amid weak equity market, dealers added.
