Trouble brews in GH as Nokma council rejects separate councils
Protest rally on September 6
Shillong, Sept 3 :Trouble is brewing in Garo Hills as the government has not consulted the Nokma council before recommending introduction of the village council and municipal council in Garo Hills.
The government wanted the twin councils to be incorporated in the proposed Sixth Schedule Amendment Bill.
A statement issued on Friday said that the Council, in view of the negative impact of the two bodies on the traditional rights, powers, functions and structure of Garo local bodies, has resolved to urge the Meghalaya government to totally withdraw the recommendation given to the Union government.
“Since, the proposed introduction of the village council and municipal council shall have an effect on the traditional fabric of the Garo society, the Nokma Council and the Garo civil societies in its joint meeting on September 8, decided to take the issue to the people of Garo Hills,” it said.
The Nokma Council and the Garo civil societies will hold a protest rally/public demonstrstion cum public meeting on September 6 at Nokma Council office Balading Tura in this regard.
