Conrad meets union Agri-Minister, seeks help for organic farming

CM highlights Lakh Pati Didi initiative

Shillong, Feb 3: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma met the Union Agriculture Minister Shiv Raj Singh Chauhan on Monday and sought financial  assistance for the development of organic farming in Meghalaya.

According to Sangma, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Meghalaya is going to be the highest organic land owning states of the country in the years to come.

After his meeting with the union minister, Sangma said that Meghalaya has already started Organic Mission and local agencies have been engaged for certification tasks.

Earlier, as certification agencies were from outside the state, the farmers in Meghalaya who resorted to oraganic farming were facing difficulties in terms of certification.

The chief minister said his government is  implementing Lakh Pati Didi program in a grand way, especially after 2018 his government has been studiously working out schemes and has make Lakhs of Lakh Pati Didis in Meghalaya. He informed that Lakh Pati Didi program would be further vigorously implemented in the state by making women economically strong.

The state cabinet had on January 30 approved the Pla Tangka Cooperative Society (PTCS), a women-led apex financial cooperative for Self Help Groups to improve access to funds and boost rural entrepreneurship.

Lakh Pati Didi scheme derives from this initiative.
