Death of Khasi coal mine workers: Family, Ri Bhoi police rush to Tinsukia

Shillong, May 26: The family members and the Ri Bhoi police have gone to Tinsukia on Sunday to bring back the bodies of the two Ri Bhoi youths, who were killed in a coal mine in Tinsukia district of Assam.

A senior state police official said on Sunday that John Nongrum from Jatah village and Phiniellin Umbah from Korhadem village were killed in the mine incident.
Ri Bhoi SP Jagpal Singh Dhanoa said the police received the information on Saturday around 11.30 am.

“We were contacted by family members through MLA Mawhati and the information was relayed to Assam police .We immediately brought to the notice of civil and police authorities of Tinsukia”, he added.
According to reports from Assam, the incident happened on Saturday at an illegal rat-hole mine at a mine in Patkai Hills, Tinsukia.
While three miners-John, Phiniellin from Ri Bhoi and Dawa Sherpa from Bhojpur in Nepal, who were working inside the mine were killed due to a landslide, the remaining one who, was standing outside to transport coal, escaped unhurt.
The NDRF is on the job to retrieve the bodies, the police added.
