Landslide claims 27 in Mizoram; rescue work still on

Shillong, May 28: Cyclone Remal is wreaking havoc in the North East with Mizoram being the worst affected so far. Landslides have claimed at least 27 lives in the state and damaged properties at Melthum, Hlimen, Falkawn and Salem Veng in Aizawl.

The State Disaster Response Force personnel has teamed up with Melthum Local Council and YMA for the rescue work. At the time of the publication, a DIPR Mizoram statement said 27 bodies were recovered. The search and rescue operations are on.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Minister in charge of Disaster Management and Rehabilitation (DM&R) K. Sapdanga were on-site at Melthum with other government officials. The chief minister has announced Rs 15 crore for the State Disaster Relief Fund and Rs 4 lakh as ex gratia to the kin of the deceased.

Electricity and water supply have been affected due to damage to infrastructure.

The cyclone led to the collapse of a stone quarry near Aizawl burying 12 people, according to initial media reports.

Assam and Meghalaya have also been affected by the cyclone with Assam and Meghalaya reporting one death each and the former reporting several injuries.
