Shillong,Oct 4: The University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) wanted the state government to give interest-free loan of Rs 233 crore for the PA Sangma International Medical College and Hospital, a joint venture of USTM and Government of Meghalaya
Addressing a press conference here on Friday , the USTM chancellor Mahbubul Hoque referred to the approval granted by the National Medical Commission of India under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to the medical college and hospital to launch the MBBS course with 150 intake from the 2024 academic session.
Regarding the loan, the USTM hoped that the goverment will release it to be repayed in 20 years.
The academic session will start from the last week of October 2024 inviting applications from aspiring doctors from the state of Meghalaya and across the country.
M Hoque said the patients and the students need not go outside the state for healthcare services. “A Super Speciality hospital with organ transplant facility will be fully operational by the next 6 months. Super specialist doctors from other parts of the country will join PIMC”, he said.
40 seats are allotted as state government seats out of which 25 seats will be as per the government fees structure and 15 seats will be in half of the university fees structure. For the other para -medical courses, a similar allotment pattern will be applicable for the students of Meghalaya.
In terms of healthcare, 50% concession facilities for super-speciality will be offered to the patients from Meghalaya with free general treatment facilities. One of the major objectives is to attract ASEAN countries to avail healthcare facilities of PIMC in the near future.

Nobody can restrict students
Hoque said nobody can disallow the students of the university from getting jobs.
His reply was in response to the question on Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma,who had said the students passing out of USTM will not be eligible for government jobs in Assam.
“Education is a concurrent issue. So any student passing out from any University anywhere in the country and even globally, that nobody can restrict anyone. Nowadays all the jobs are based on the various competitive examinations today if our students qualify cracking the NET examination, our students are eligible for any university or any colleges,” Hoque added.
